Tile rummy, for 2 to 4. Lay sets and runs from your rack, then pull the table apart and build it back your way. First to empty their rack wins.
- 106 tiles: the numbers 1 to 13 in four colours — teal, plum, rust and slate — two of each, and two gold ★ jokers.
- 14 tiles each on your rack. The rest is the pool, face down.
- A group is 3 or 4 tiles of the same number, every colour different.
- A run is 3 or more numbers in a row in one colour. 1 is always low: 12 13 1 is not a run.
- A ★ stands in for any tile.
- Either play tiles from your rack, or draw one tile from the pool. That's your go.
- Your opening is new sets from your own rack only, worth 30 or more. A ★ counts as the tile it stands for. Until you've opened, the sets already on the table stay as they are.
- Once you've opened you may rebuild the table: split sets, move tiles between them, add yours anywhere — as long as every set is whole when you finish and at least one tile came from your rack. A set with a ★ in it can be split and taken from like any other.
- The ★ swap: if you hold the tile a ★ stands for, put it in and the ★ is freed — it has to go into a set that same go.
You build your go on your own phone — nothing moves for anyone else until you tap Done. If a set isn't whole yet, the app says which one and your go stays open. Undo puts everything back to the start of your go.
- The first to empty their rack wins. Everyone else scores minus what's left on their rack (a ★ counts 30); the winner scores the total.
- If the pool runs out and everyone passes in turn, the game ends: the lowest rack wins, everyone else loses the difference, and the winner scores the total.
Where it comes from. Rack & Run is from the rummy family of games, played with tiles instead of cards — cousins of the Turkish game Okey, which is played the same way with tiles on a rack. Our rules follow the tile-rummy rules on Pagat; the name, the tiles and these words are our own.
